FOREWORD

Botanical Resources of Hollister Ranch, Santa Barbara County, California represents a cooperative effort between the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) Museum of Systematics and Ecology (MSE) and the Hollister Ranch Conservancy. Funding provided by the Conservancy helped support two students who conducted much of the fieldwork, and contributed toward the publication of the report. University contributions included MSE funding for the figures produced through development of a Geographic Information System, which was constructed by the UCSB Biogeography Laboratory. Hollister Ranch has a long history of collaboration with the University of California, as exemplified by the compilation of an earlier work for a senior thesis entitled A Flora of Hollister Ranch, by Martin Fletcher. We are pleased to provide this new document, which catalogues and describes the botanical resources of a biologically rich and unique portion of the California coast.

Botanical Resource of Hollister Ranch, Santa Barbara County, California is printed as Environmental Report No.10 of the: MSE, which is managed through the Department of Ecology, Evolution, and Marine Biology (EEMB) at the University of California, Santa Barbara. This report series is produced on an occasional basis and includes products of various contracts and grants awarded to MSE. The Museum of Systematics and Ecology is a program-oriented facility that includes the following: (1) traditional roles of natural history museums such as biotic inventories, systematics and biogeographic studies, voucher specimen curation, exhibits, and public service; as well as (2) extended roles such as organismal-level and ecological studies, ecosystem evaluations, habitat management, and environmental planning and impact analysis. The academic mission of MSE is to provide research and educational services for EEMB and to initiate and support research and educational programs at university-wide, community-based, and professional levels. The public service mission includes a wide range of biological services, thereby assuring the availability of knowledge and services at many levels. The Museum's professional and public service missions are fulfilled in part through the MSE Environmental Report Series.
